Re:Shortland Street - Thurs 17th May

Series 21, Episode 4991, Fri 18 May 2012

I thought that the only content in today's episode would be Maia supporting the heart transplant storyline, but all of a sudden there's Nicole sitting with the family at the IV talking about it all (and looking pretty swish, getting dressed up after work just to go home, Nicole? Trying to impress someone, maybe? ) After the updates them with a last six months infodump she leaves to get her food and Maia looks after her wistfully.

Lana and Nicole are talking at the clinic, Nicole is updating her on how the family are handling it all, Lana is telling her she's been a good supportive friend. She asks if she'll see Nicole later. As she leaves Maia's other sister appears, and asks Nicole if that's her new girlfriend.
Nicole: She... almost was. Long story. We're just mates.
Sister 2: She seems lovely.
Nicole: She is.
Sister 2 asks if there's some unresolved business between Nicole and Maia, Nicole says no, but S2 points out that Maia might be mistaking kindness for something more. Message received.

Nicole gets to be the one to announce that a compatible heart has been found for sickboy. Because they always let the nurses tell the families that sort of stuff. Maia tries to be very grateful, Nicole gets out of there fast. Hmm, so I was wrong about it being a regular cast member dying?

Sidenote: Chris Warner is an idiot. Crazy stalker girl must have a history of this behaviour. Investigate her!
And I'm sure the writers think they're very clever having serial philanderer Chris (the only original character, he was introduced in episode one cheating on fiance Alison Raynor (Danielle Cormack)) up on inappropriate relationship with a patient charges for the 20th Anniversary episode. It's the one time he hasn't cheated.

Ach! It's a standard (and irritating) soap/Shorty storyline - psycho person persecutes someone and convinces everyone that the victim is the perp/wrong-doer. The guy who has been supporting Chris now, was the victim of a similar storyline a while back.

It's irritating because in r/l no-one would get away with such a blatant deception.

Meanwhile the Nicole-Lana storyline simmers away, while Maia is the McGuffin driving the complications.

How did I not know about these recaps earlier, they're hilarious, thanks!

I have to say, I really hope Nicole end up with Lana and not Maia (or no-one).

Partly because I think they make a super cute couple. Maia and Nicole never really worked that well.

But also because every time Lana shows off her cleavage (happens kinda often) I get a wee bit hot and bothered!!

Thanks, I'm glad you like them. Welcome aboard the ship!

Yeah, I really think the show is pushing Nicole/Lana, but it's never going to be a smooth path to love, even as fast as Shorty St moves.

Ok, here we go with the three times as long 20 years anniversary special recap.

Series 21, Episode 4992, 4993, 4994, Mon May 21 2012

And it starts with a disclaimer on screen "This was filmed before the distressing events in Canterbury today." The Shortland St curse strikes again.

I can't just recap the Lana/Nicole/Maia storyline tonight, because it's one of those times everything intertwines.
I can ignore the "Chris tries to protect his stalker from her abusive boyfriend and gets arrested for her murder" storyline, I'll only briefly touch on the "Cooper family buy a house" storyline, I have to mention the "detoxing druggie with a history at the clinic holds someone hostage to try and get morphine" since it's going to cross over. I'll definitely skip the diversion through bald doctor's deodorant and dizty receptionist's underwear.

Five minutes in and we have anti-redhead prejudice "not that there's anything wrong with that".

First reference to 16 year old Phoenix's mother (a long gone founding cast member). Ah, memories.

Maia's extended family are arriving at the clinic to wait while sickboy has his heart transplant. A helicopter is about to leave to retrieve the heart. They're talking about who the surgeon will be. A doctor says he's sure Nicole will be volunteering to be on the nursing team during the operation.

Nicole is talking to Maia: The next time I renew my drivers license I'm definitely ticking the organ donation option.
Maia: Still no guarantee though, it's next of kin who decide. I keep thinking of that poor family in Whangarei. By the time Gerald knows what's happened they'll be getting ready for a funeral.
Vinnie: Something good out of something terrible, that's what we need to focus on.
Nicole: Yes, positive thoughts please, it's a miracle this is happening at all.
Maia: It'd be nice to think there's a friend in there with him in theatre tonight. I know it's silly.
Nicole: I'm not rostered on, sorry.
Vinnie: Do I count?
Maia: Eh?
Vinnie: As a friend?
Maia: Of course! (lovely rising inflection there Maia, but we know Nicole is the one who counts for you)
Vinnie: Cause I'll be in theatre tonight, so I'll make sure Gerald is OK.
Maia: Thanks.
Nicole walks up behind where Vasa is looking worried at her computer, and finds out that she is in need of a "Cardiac Scrub Nurse" to go with the team retrieving the heart. Of course Nicole volunteers, it beats sitting at home waiting. Uhoh.

As Maxwell mentions to the receptionist that there's a room full of old stuff that's everyone's too afraid to throw out, Nicole is in her helicopter outfit talking to Lana.

Lana: When do you leave.
Nicole: Any minute now. You don't mind?
Lana: Why would I mind? Gerald is like family to you.
Nicole: Because this has nothing to do with me and Maia getting back together. I meant what I said, it's over over.
Lana: I know.
Nicole: So if you're worried, or just a smidge jealous, don't be.
Lana: I'm not.
The guy in charge of the helicopter team comes past and says "we're on". Lana takes Nicole's hand and squeezes it, Nicole grabs it with both hers. Lana says "call me when you get back" and walks off.

Maxwell comes up to Nicole: What was that?
Nicole: What? She squeezed my hand.
Maxwell: It's the way you were looking at her when you did it.
Nicole just gives him a look and gets into the lift with the rest of the team. Once she's gone Maxwell is all "OMG, Lana and Nicole?" to ditzy receptionist, who tries to claim she just minds her own business.

Lana sees Maia's family in the staff cafe and introduces herself.

Lana and the receptionist are going through boxes from storage - old nurses uniforms - blue ones, apricot ones. Lana take them off to share at the Cooper family housebuying party.

The drug addict who was detoxing tries to hold Roimata hostage to get morphine, then steals a swipe card and goes on the run round the clinic.

The chopper is getting closer to the hospital.

At the party they're looking at the old uniforms. There are name tags as well. Ellen Crozier (Robyn Malcom), Jaki Manu (Nancy Brunning), Alison Rayner (Danielle Cormack). They decide to have an impromptu fashion show in the uniforms. It's actually a really nice nod to the past without bringing people back for no good reason.

The druggie has headed upstairs, he takes a lift to the roof. Maxwell's outside getting some air. The receptionist is heading towards her car to go to the party.

As the helicopter is about to land drug guy runs onto the helipad, the chopper goes up sideways to avoid him, hits something and starts to crash. Noo, Nicole's onboard!

Maxwell and the new doctor are the first to the crash, they get three people out, injured or unconscious. The chopper is partially on the receptionist's car, she's trapped, but quickly released. Maxwell is trying to find Nicole.

The news of the crash is brought to the waiting family, Maia and her sister head outside to help? See? Panic about sickboy's heart?

Maxwell finds Nicole trapped under the helicopter, she's alive but unresponsive. Cue lots of moving metal panels.

Meanwhile the fashion show is in full swing, Lana looks very cute in the apricot-yellow uniform. Hey, I remember when they brought those in.

Maia finds where Maxwell is trying to get to Nicole. She doesn't really get to be supergirl, but Maxwell and new doctor jack the wreckage up, and get in close enough to get a neck brace on Nicole and get her out, she's responding a bit. As more emergency services arrive she's brought out on a stretcher. Meanwhile they can't find the heart, it was thrown out of the helicopter, so the search is on. Eventually they find the box it is in up a tree.

Meanwhile Maxwell and Maia are with Nicole, they need to xray her neck, and she's not very stable.

Miracles, the heart is still viable and going to be implanted.

At the party Lana rings Nicole's cell and leaves a message, hoping the heart delivery has gone well. Sarah overhears and asks what the news is. She mentions Maia being back and how that might be affecting Nicole. Lana agrees it has had an affect. Bald doctor says Lana doesn't need to say anything she doesn't want to say, making it obvious he's heard the gossip. He won't say more, but now Sarah and Daniel are curious, and pushing Lana to explain. Lana says she and Nicole had briefly wondered if they were more than friends. Daniel (Lana's ex) blurts out "Since when do you like girls?" Sarah apologises for him and says congratulations, Lana says nothing really happened, or will, probably. She heads off from the party. When she gets home she gets a call from Nicole's phone.

Nicole is conscious, and trying to talk through a breathing mask, as Maia asks where else she hurts. Maxwell says her neck x-ray is fine and removes the brace. She has a fractured leg bone that will need to be operated on. Nicole is telling Maia she's okay, "hard to get rid of", when Lana rushes in.
Nicole: Hi!
Lana: Am I allowed to hug you?
Nicole: If a big old helicopter crash couldn't break me I don't think you're going to.
Lana leans down and hugs her very gently. And awkwardly, given medical equipment and everything else.
She thanks Maia for calling her. She hugs Nicole again and Maia and Maxwell exchange glances over the top of them.

So yay, Nicole managed to survive the very special disaster of the year (well there will be another one in December, because there's always one in December). I didn't really think there was much danger for her - so much more drama in her being alive and surrounded by exes rather than dead, to say nothing of unfinished business with Lana, but you never know with soaps, and it's always a bit dangerous not being straight.

In fact was there only one death in this episode? (I guess a heart donor in Whangarei makes two)? Nobody died from rampant special effects.
