Re:Shortland Street - Recaps, Spoilers and Discussion

#21 1 year, 11 months ago
It seems TVNZ On Demand has tightened their security and I can no longer find a way to download files of Shortland St. Which is a pain for rewatching for recaps. Hard on my data cap. But here's Thursday's episode, Friday will follow soon.

Series 21, Ep 4978, Thursday 3rd May

Somewhere in the Shortland St clinic a lift dings and Lana bumps into her flatmate Vinnie, who is just headed for the gym. He suggests she go too, she says she's not the muscley type, he says she should live a little. She replies that she's already emailed Gabrielle* to say that she can't Skype tonight and will be hung over tomorrow.
Vinnie: See, that Nicole is a bad influence. I like it!
He high fives her and leaves.

Some guy walks up, he recognises her from highschool, and introduces himself as Nathan Jacobs from the first fifteen. She says sorry, she had nothing to do with the jocks, she doesn't recognise him. He says he remembers her as a wannabe art school snob, and she hasn't changed (we see her other flatmate, Nicole, approaching in the background), She characterises him as a boufhead, and when Nicole says Hi she calls him a saddo and dismisses him. Nicole says she's in the zone for partying tonight, puts her arm around Lana and they giggle as they leave.

Next morning:
(note in passing from another storyline: ditzy receptionist is with odd bald guy. I so called that a year ago)
Roimata sees Lana drinking coffee and asks if she had a hard night. Lana says no, Nicole wanted to head home before they even hit the drink drive limit. Roimata observes that that's not like Nicole. Lana's theory is that Nicole isn't over her break up with Maxwell. Roimata suggests that Nicole saw Lana and Vinnie sparking together and got jealous.
Lana: And what, she wants Vinnie for herself?
Roimata: I think Nicole is over brown boys for a now. White girls on the other hand...
Lana is disbelieving: Just because she's bisexual doesn't mean she's going to go for anyone in a skirt. And especially not since she Lana is straight.
Roimata says she's probably right and leaves, but we can see a seed is planted for Lana.

That evening Lana and Nicole are at the bar, Lana is still worried that Nicole is upset about Maxwell, Nicole assures her she completely over him, we can see that Nicole's typical hands on body language as she looks straight into Lana's eyes is making Lana worry again. She fixes on the first two guys she sees and decides they'll join them. Nicole is disappointed that their girls' night out is changing, but Lana is determined. Awkwardly one of the guys is old schoolmate Nathan, who reminds her she called him a boufhead and asks why she would want to have a drink with him? But Lana pushes on, apologising and convincing the guys to accept some shots. Nicole has no choice but to join in, despite finding Nathan's remarks crude.

Later Nicole drags Lana to the bathroom and suggests they sneak off because she thinks the guys are douchebags. But Lana refuses to go, saying it's ages since she's practiced flirting with anyone. Nicole says he's an ape and leaves.

Once Nicole is gone Nathan tries to make a move on Lana, she calls him a jerk, as he is insulting her back he reveals he always wanted to ask her out in highschool, they reach a truce and decide to start over.

Nicole wanders back to the clinic and bumps into Roimata to whom she complains about the "tosser" Lana is hanging with. She decides to head home and vege out in front of the TV, but finds Lana and Nathan have gotten home before her. When Lana asks to borrow (have) some of Nicole's tequila, drunkenly bantering with Nathan all the while, Nicole decides Lana needs protecting and joins them, eventually she pressures Nathan into leaving.

Lana, very annoyed, asks why Nicole scared him into leaving, Nicole say it's because he was a jerk. Lana says he wasn't, ok, maybe initially, but when they got talking... Nicole insists Lana can do much better, Lana asks, "isn't that for her to decide?" Nicole admits it is, but says she was doing Lana a favour.
Nicole: Besides, you don't need anyone at the moment, you've got me. And Vinnie. And hey, how convenient is that, if we need a guy there's one living right down the hall.
Lana: It's not quite the same.
Nicole: No, it's better. We get to do the fun single stuff and not have to put up with the boring boy drama. That's why I was so happy to move into this place, because we're likeminded, fun loving people. It's meant to be.
She leaves Lana looking dumbfounded.

Series 21, Ep 4979, Friday 4th May

Vinnie and Lana are eating breakfast at the cafe, Nicole walks up and says jokingly "where was my invite?"
Lana says she invited herself - she knew Vinnie always has breakfast there after his weights session and they were out of breakfast cereal at home. Vinnie suggests Nicole join them now. Lana immediately says she has to go, citing work she needs to do early. They ask about the work project but she says she can't tell, she's sworn to secrecy. She offers to shout them a coffee before she goes, and when Nicole grabs her hand and says, still joking "you will tell us everything, we have ways to make you talk" Lana is particularly flustered and rushes off to order the coffee. Nicole tells Vinnie Lana is annoyed with her over the Nathan thing.

Roimata approaches Lana at the till and asks what is up with her and Nicole "This isn't because of what I said yesterday, about Nicole maybe liking you? Because I never meant to make thing awkward with you guys." Lana explains that they just had a little tiff over a guy she liked the previous evening. Roimata notes how stressed she is Lana says it's just work related "Nicole and I will be besties again by the end of the day."

Lunchtime, in the staff cafe, Lana is just leaving with a brown paper bag as Nicole arrives. Nicole suggests they have lunch together, Lana tries to leave, Nicole says she ran out on her at breakfast too, Lana claims it's just work busy-ness, Vincent appears and Lana hands him the scone she got for him, said she was going to wait for him, Nicole calls her on it and says "This is about Nathan isn't it?"
Vinnie: Nicole says you brought someone home last night. You kept that very quiet at breakfast.
Lana: There was nothing to tell, nothing happened.
Nicole: Only because I scared him off, that's why you're not speaking to me.
Lana: I am speaking to you.
Vinnie: I can feel the tension and something seriously needs sorting out here ladies.
Lana disagrees and goes off at him, sending him packing: "go find a seat, fill your cake hole with that and butt out"
Nicole meanwhile has a new theory, she asks Lana if she's trying to get time alone with Vinnie and not telling him about other guys because she's keen on Vinnie. Lana looks astonished, and leaves without a word.

Lana is listening to the ditzy receptionist babble, D.R. is looking t gossip websites and say that a well known Dj has just come out, she tries to show Lana a picture and Lana is all "you shouldn't be looking at that at work". Ditzy asks her if she has something against gays, Lana says of course not "I flat with Nicole, remember."
Ditzy: Oh yeah, I forget that Nicole is a part time lesbian.
Lana: It's not that she's part time, just when she's attracted to someone gender's not an issue.
Ditzy: Yeah, I know, but I don't really get it. Do you?
Lana (quickly): No. Why would I?
Ditzy: Oh sorry, I didn't mean to dis Nicole, I know how close you guys are.
Lana: We're not that close...and we're not going to be.
Ditzy: What?
Lana apologises and heads off, Vinnie joins her by the lifts. You can see Lana considering him a she follows him in.

Nicole comes upon Lana and Vinnie doubled over laughing, they explain the practical joke they pulled in the cafe. Nicole smiles along. Once Vinnie leaves Lana tells Nicole she hadn't thought it was possible for a guy to have a hot body and a sense of humour. Nicole asks if she's going to make a move on him, Lana says it hadn't crossed her mind til Nicole pointed it out. Lana asks if Nicole would be put out if anything happens, since it would change the flat dynamic, etc. Nicole says of course not, but quickly excuses herself, leaving Lana biting her lip.

Nicole sees Lana and Vinnie coming and heads in the other direction, but they overtake her. Lana says she's planning to cook dinner tonight, and will Nicole be there. Nicole says she probably won't be, because she has a nursing course she has to go on, then has to talk fast when Vinnie asks why he's not doing it.

Roimata and Nicole in the staff cafe:
Roimata: Vinnie and Lana? Since when?
Nicole: I don't think Vinnie has cottoned on yet, but Lana is totally into him. I mean, you saw them this morning, having breakfast at Sugar.
Roimata: They looked like friends to me.
Nicole: Well look again. They're always together. Always laughing over their little jokes.
Roimata:But what about the rugbyhead guy Lana brought back last night, the one you guys fell out over?
Nicole: I guess she decided she likes Vinnie more. Who wouldn't, Nathan was a jerk.
Roimata: Where does this leave you, if they go out?
Nicole: It'll be like living with you and TK again, the annoying third wheel.
Roimata: You were not.
Nicole: Yes, I was, you were lovely about it but I was in the way. So this time I thought, great, three singles living together, we'll have heaps of fun, no complications, i wish.
Roimata: Well like you say, Vinnie and Lana haven't actually hooked up yet. It might not happen.
Nicole: Yeah, but she wants it to, and that's changed everything. I'm just little Nicky no mates, and that's how it is.

So, where is this storyline going, and does it mean anything? Yay for the writers realising the additional triangle possibilities Nicole provides. This everyone is confused as to who wants who story happens sooo often on Shorty, nice that it works just as well when gender doesn't matter. Except when it does, and it certainly does for Lana right now - is she just an over sensitive straight girl, or is she going to realise just how much she enjoys Nicole?

Nicole was overdramatising in that last scene, in a very Nicole way, she's jealous of something, but I'm inclined to believe what she's saying, or at least to believe she believes it - she's usually very upfront about things, I think if she was attracted to Lana she'd tell her. Or remove herself from the situation if she was sure Lana wouldn't be interested. But I wouldn't say she isn't subconsciously attracted to her, she's developed a close friendship with her really fast, and is pretty hands on in their interactions. We shall see.

Either way, I think this'll be resolved in a handful of episodes. Very Shortland St, this would last weeks or months on a daytime soap.

Ha! Thanks for reminding me. Forgot to watch it tonight. mind you, when it's ondemand I can flick through the other storylines.

PS: I got the feeling Nicole is keen on Lana, even if she doesn't really realise it, and Lana does seem to have a touch of the gay panics.

The writers are definitely setting something up.

A Nicole/Lana pairing was first mooted on fan messageboards back in February, and the timing for both of them breaking up with their boyfriends is suspicious.

Jumping in here to say I think it's pretty much guaranteed Lana/Nic will hook up. Mostly based on the sneak peeks:

'Nicole is shocked by unexpected affection'

then

'Nicole's dreams come true.'

Which I think is Lana realizing she wants Nicole and they'll have a friday ep end with a kiss or something. The interesting thing is that the week the Jefferies come back (cough, Maia) is when the descriptions start to sour;

'Nicole is confronted by her feelings'

'Lana is used and abused. Nicole loses out on love'

'A broken heart endangers the Jefferies family'

'Lana's eaten up by doubt'

My guess is that Maia comes in and tells Nicole she wants her back which causes friction between Nic/Lana. Nicole rejects her in favor of Lana but Lana is worried that Nicole might not stay with her. After that it's anybody's guess, really.

Well we had to wait a week, but it was worth the wait.

Series 21, Ep 4985, Friday 11 May

Vinnie and Lana are sitting on the couch at home, and he's giving her the choice of two equally bad DVDs to watch. He claims she likes vampires, she really doesn't. Nicole walks out in a very short dress, Vinnie is "Woah, that is hot."

Nicole: No, it is not hot, I look like a hooker. Don't I? I can't wear this to a black tie thing, can I?

Lana (avoiding looking at her much): Depends on the black tie thing.
Nicole: It's my nursing school reunion. Graduation class.
Vinnie: Cool.
Nicole: No, not cool. Probably everyone there will be in couples, except me. In fact probably everyone will be married. To doctors. I can't wear this and I can't afford to buy anything.
Vinnie turns to Lana.
Lana: What?
Vinnie: Well you can sew!
Lana: When's the dinner?
Nicole: Tomorrow night.
Lana: Not a hope, sorry. (To Vinnie) Are we watching this?
Vinnie (as Nicole leaves the room): But you said these are crap?
Lana: They are.
Vinnie: But now you want to watch one.
Lana: Yes.
Vinnie: Why?
Lana: Because.

Lana and Vinnie at the bar, Vinnie's saying she laughed at the movie, Lana says yes, because the pointy teeth and blood looked so ridiculous. He tries to get her to admit she liked it. Then gets serious.
Vinnie: So why do you like me all of a sudden?
Lana: I've never not liked you. Apart from your taste in movies.
Vinnie: Yeah, but you don't hung out with Nicole anymore.
Lana (quietly): I live with Nicole.
Vinnie: Sure you live with Nicole, but you don't hang out with her like you used to, like all the time. And I thought you'd gotten over the Nathan thing.
Lana: We did.
Vinnie: So? What's going on?
Lana: Nothing
Vinnie: Nothing? Is that code for some kind of chick thing?
Lana: Will you shut up.
Vinnie: Oh, come on. It was totally weird last night when she came out in the frock and you cut her dead.
Lana: I didn't cut her dead
Vinnie: I was there, OK. You iced her out.
Lana: Well what does she want? She knows the frock looks terrible, the thing's tonight, it's typical Nicole leaving everything to the last minute. What am I meant to do, perform a miracle and run her up something to wear?
Vinnie: Oh, here's a thought, she's your friend. Yeah, your friend. Who could do with some moral support right now. Eh? C'mon, you know your Uncle Vinnie is right.
He leaves her thinking.

Nicole is sitting at the cafe. Lana nervously approaches and wishes her "Happy International Nurses Day". Nicole is enjoying the muffins that Admin have provided but says she'd prefer money. Lana asks if she has had any luck finding a dress, Nicole says there's not much point when she can't afford it, she might as well not go. Lana says she might have a dress she could wear, and that she could alter it to fit Nicole. Nicole asks if Vinnie has put her up to this, when Lana demurs Nicole says Vinnie has guilted her. Lana says she wants to help, Nicole points out she didn't want to last night. Lana admits Vinnie made her realise she was being a total cow. Nicole says Lana is just feeling sorry for her, and the dress thing isn't Lana's problem. She leaves.

But later she finds Lana and apologises for walking out. Lana says she doesn't blame her, since she hasn't been a good friend lately. Nicole agrees that she's been ignoring her, but says she doesn't have to apologise, it's just been a difficult time.
Nicole: So, you and Vinnie...?
Lana: No! No way!
Nicole: Goodness, what has the boy done?
Lana: Nothing. Me and Vinnie, never going to work. What was I thinking. I've been doing some dumb thinking lately. {Yep, it's called gay panic, Lana}
Nicole says it was nice of her to offer the dress, Lana says she still is, and assures her she can do it right after work, Nicole accepts. Lana looks much happier as they part.

At home Nicole is wearing the dress as Lana pins it. Nicole says there is wine in the fridge and suggests they have some. They're both happy to be hanging out together again.

A little later Lana is ironing the dress, while they talk about the reunion. Nicole is remembering her least favourite classmate, who according to not!Facebook, has the perfect life as a rich doctor's wife. Maxwell was supposed to go to the reunion with Nicole before they broke up, Nicole feels like a loser for going alone. Lana says she should ask Vinnie to go with her, he'd look great in a tux. Nicole says he'd be bored. She'll be fine and she probably won't stay long.
Lana: I'll come with you.
Nicole: You won't know anyone.
Lana: The partners never do at these things. I don't mind.*stammer* Not that we're actually partners partners.
Nicole: You're worried they'll think we're gay...
Lana: I'm coming with you whether you like it or not.
By Nicole's smile she seems to like it.

They're in their dresses and applying makeup at the same mirror.
as they banter together. Nicole decides they need a shot before she calls a taxi. They drink and giggle.

Later they're still drinking, and Nicole is going off the idea of going to the reunion, she's apologetic for wasting Lana's time on the dress, but Lana is just happy that they're hanging out together. She says she has a confession to make.
Nicole: Not possible, unlike me you are a saint.
Lana: No, I have to say this, i feel really guilty about something.
Nicole: OK
Lana: It's the reason I've been hanging out with Vinnie and not you. *she pauses* OK, it's because I thought you were attracted to me. And I couldn't handle it, so I tried to put some distance between us. There. I said it.
Nicole: I am attracted to you. I didn't mean for it to happen, it just did. And this is not me coming on to you, I just, I can't lie. I think it's better if the truth is out there even if you hate me for it.
Lana: I don't hate you.
She leans in and kisses Nicole.
